Northern Illinois University, more commonly referred to as simply NIU, is a public university located in DeKalb, which is a city in DeKalb County, situated in the US state of Illinois, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 40 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. The City of DeKalb draws its name from the decorated German war hero Johann De Kalb, who died during the American Revolutionary War.
NIU was founded by Illinois Governor John P. Altgeld, on May 22, 1895, as a satellite campus for the higher-learning educational institution known today as Illinois State University, managing to grow larger than its parent school, having today an enrollment of more than 25 000 students. Over the past 3 decades, the university managed to largely expand, consisting today of 8-degree granting colleges, which all together offer students more than 60 undergraduate majors, 9 pre-professional programs, 70 minors and 79 graduate programs, including 11 doctoral programs.
The U.S. News & World Report classified NIU as a "National University", which means that it is a school that conducts significant research and awarding degrees, up to the doctoral level. Northern Illinois is the 2nd largest university in the state, after University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, also being a member of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges. Northern Illinois University is also recognized by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, as an elite institution of higher education, based on breadth of research and academic programs.
The athletic teams from NIU are known as the Northern Illinois Huskies, who currently compete in the Mid-American Conference, in several sports, their most successful achievements being in football, in which they attended the bowl games in 2004, defeating Troy State in the Silicon Valley Classic, and in women’s badminton, in which they won the 1982 AIAW national collegiate championship. Being almost completely unknown, outside the state of Illinois, before the mid-1990’s, the Huskies have experienced some growth in reputation in the late 1990’s and early 2000.
NIU has produced a series of notable alumni, among the most resonant names on the list being: Joan Allen - Academy Award-Nominated, Jeffrey Aronin - founder and Former President, Ovation Pharmaceuticals, now part of Lundbeck, Ned Colletti - MLB general manager for Los Angeles Dodgers, Paul Sereno - paleontologist, University of Chicago, Robert Reed - business journalist/commentator for Business Week Chicago Chicago Magazine, WBBM-AM News radio 780, Crain’s Chicago Business; presented the NIU Distinguished Alumni Award, as well as many other people, who have made themselves notable, in various fields, after graduation.
